Morro Bay California

Morro Bay CaliforniaWithout a doubt, my favorite ocean front town is Morro Bay California. Never heard of it? Well, don't just take my word, visit this tiny community on your next trip to the California coast. Some of you will possibly remember the Alfred Hitchcock's Movie "The Birds" was filmed here. We found this jewel, nearly twenty years ago while driving coast Highway 1 from San Francisco to the Los Angeles area.

Morro Bay CaliforniaWhile there are several beautiful cities and towns along the way, Morro Bay California is no ordinary tourist town. Fact is, this is Morro Bay's second best feature. Its first is of course, the Pacific Ocean and magnificent beach. I love to walk the beach here, starting at the Morro Bay Rock, resting just off shore. On the beach after high tide, sand dollars are plentiful. My favorite past time is collecting the shells and occasionally encountering a jellyfish having been washed ashore. You will also see numerous sea otters. Stop and watch them for a while. They are amusing and sometimes seem more intelligent than a few people I know. Especially noteworthy, is how incredibly clean the beach is on every trip we've made to Morro Bay California.
Embarcadero Street is within walking distance south of Morro Bay Rock, and the main thoroughfare for business, including restaurants, fishing tours, and gift shops. On the street's west side, shops perch along the ocean edge. Piers is open and used regularly by fishermen.

Morro Bay CaliforniaIf you select a fishing tour, you may want to consider Virg's Fishing on Embarcado street. Voyt gave it a whirl, enjoying the first hour or so, until seasickness snuck up on him. He said right off the bat, he caught a really large red snapper. By the end, he was hanging over the rail. I happen to be a little to chipper on his return to the pier. I'm expecting to hear all about his adventure, and instead here "Let's Go," on his reaching me. His tone left me with little doubt, he was no happy camper. All I can say, is Thank the good Lord above, I didn't go along, as he wanted. Our battling for the boat's tiny bathroom would have been really ugly. I think, Voyt had to put a move on one fellow who thought smoking a cigarette inside the cabin was a good idea. Word much have gotten around because not another soul approached Voyt from this point on. And he's usually such a nice guy.
Don't let his bout with seasickness discourage any of you. He said the crew and facilities on the boat were first-rate. Just take some Dramamine beforehand, if you too are in doubt of your sea legs. Tours are half days and full days. Another piece of luck, he took the half days trip.

If you love seafood, and who doesn't, our absolute favorite restaurant is "The Great American Fish Company. It too, is located on Embarcadero Street, near the northern end of town. Fresh seafood, as I intimated is their specialty and very delicious. You can believe me. Their atmosphere is also nice, with much of the dining room over looking the water and pier area.
On each of our trips, we always stay at the Morro Dunes RV camping site(
www.morrodunes.com). The site is located directly across the frontage road from the ocean. Considering its wonderful location rates were not bad and we've been lucky each time to get a space without reservations. Note: Our stays were during the week. I believe weekends are usually booked in advance. At night listening to the ocean waves hitting the shore is peaceful and bound to put any one into a restful sleep.

If your expecting fast food restaurants, or those big nationally known stores, Morro Bay California is not for you. The citizens have left their community with a small hometown quality. People here are still friendly and helpful. Life is lived in the slow lane. Although there are tourist, such as me about, the streets are easy to navigate. Even getting a table at the restaurants isn't bad. Parking is along the streets and in a few parking lots. I have seen RV's in the parking lot, none with a vehicle in tow.
If you don't mind the walk, you can also park at the north end of Embarcadero Street in a parking area for beach goers. The area is large enough to handle RV's towing vehicles. You could also enjoy the beach at the same time. NOTE: There is no over night parking here.

Morro Bay California, is located on Hwy. 1, 136 miles south of Monterey and 214 miles north of Los Angeles. The Morro Dunes RV Camping Site coming south from San Francisco is off Highway 1 at the Atascadero Exit, turn right, take road to end, turn left, about .5 mile from exit.
Hope to see you in Morro Bay California soon.
