Bigfoot Visits Honobia Oklahoma

Oklahoma BigfootDo you believe Bigfoot is a legend exclusive to the northwestern corner of America? If so, sightings of an Oklahoma Bigfoot has been reported in Oklahoma and especially the southeastern area has the most reports of Bigfoot sightings outside northwest America. Central to these stories of eyewitness experiences, is the small community of Honobia Oklahoma.
For years, residence have spoken of a tall, hairy creature, seen only rarely, but frequent enough for a legend to be founded. Today, several local people have reported seeing something, not man, not bear, in the forest. Most are very reluctant to speak of their experiences for fear they will be ridiculed.

We set off to investigate for ourselves, unsure what to expect, or if we could be one of the lucky, few to get a glimpse of an Oklahoma Bigfoot.Much of the Kiamichi Mountain range is undisturbed by man and as we drive along we are left to wonder if Bigfoot could exist here, seeking its solitude deep inside some corner of the mountains seldom traveled by man.
At highway 144, we turn west off U.S. 259. While the road is paved it is not wide, and downright narrow in places, especially a couple of one lane bridges.
Lunchtime arrives, and we soon pull off the road to enjoy our meal in a quiet, peaceful setting. So far, we haven't met a single car, even though there are several homes we pass along the way.

Ok, we're going to say it! As we sat there in the woods, perfectly content and munching on our sandwiches, Sharon hears something. A rather high pitched moan vibrates through the trees, lasting only a few seconds, and resulting in Sharon believing her imagination was playing tricks on her physic. Then the sound returns, probably lasting for less time than the first. Sharon looks at Voyt and said "Did you hear that?'. Naturally, Voyt hadn't heard a thing, so Sharon has no collaboration. Then again, maybe it was just the wind or maybe a Bigfoot!
We eventually come to a stop sign at a crossroad. Here we turn right and Honobia is about one half mile north. Overall, the distance from Highway 259 is only about 15 miles.

Oklahoma Bigfoot, Clancy StoreHonobia's hub of activity takes place at Clancy's Country Store. Here local folks and sightseers stop for a quick bite to eat, and occasionally swap a few stories. On entering the store, we notice a flyer hanging on a large bulletin board. It reads "Honobia Bigfoot Fall Festival." No, true Bigfoot hunter worth his or her salt could pass on this opportunity to inquire for further details.
As you probably guessed he did not come walking by where we could take photos and get an interview, but who knows what the next trip into the Kiamichi's might bring. This part of Oklahoma is remote and very beautiful, with its dense forest and deep canyons. If you decide to visit Honobia, stop by the Clancy's Store, sit out on the front porch and enjoy some of their delicious home cooking. You may want to take your camera along just in case the Oklahoma Bigfoot decides to drop by!

Soon, we are leaving Honobia behind, intrigued all the more by the tales from those living in this area. When one sees the dense forest that stretches for miles in all directions, it is not difficult to believe, if Sasquatch does exist, he could make the Kiamichi Mountains his home.

On leaving the community, we continue north on Indian Highway for some 20 odd miles to Highway 271. The drive is beautiful, and the road is wider than our road into Honobia. At Highway 271, Talihina is about 3 miles north. Although, there are some steep grades, RV’s should have no problems negotiating this road.

If you want to read what the locals are saying about the Oklahoma Bigfoot sightings, below is a report from KFSM TV station out of Fort Smith, Arkansas.

LEFLORE COUNTY - LeFlore County communities are known for bigfoot sightings and now they want to cash in on this half-man, half-ape legend.
"You could hear it following you but you could never get close enough to see it. I've seen its eyes a couple of times and they're real red," said Ronny Hammer, Honobia resident who has experienced Bigfoot on more than one occasion. "This thing was about 9 foot tall and weighed about 400 pounds. It was all hairy."
Many other residents in LeFlore County have seen the same creature.
"It looked about 8, 9,10 feet tall and broad shoulders," said Billy Ludlow, Honobia resident.
The community of Honobia has received national attention for its Bigfoot sightings. The town is so proud of the distinction that it has put footprints on the road that leads into town. Now they want to capitalize on this creatures popularity.
Katie Cogburn and other residents are organizing the First Annual Bigfoot Festival and she said it is the least the community can do for what this beast has done for them.
"We are looking forward to what bigfoot is going to do for this area. In fact, he may be our mayor, before it's all over," said Cogburn.
Robert Bastarache is a biologist with the Ouachita National Forest and he said he has never seen anything but the people around the woods have reported encounters.
"When you talk to them about these bigfoot sightings, they're passionate. They really think they've seen something,” said Bastarache.
“I believe there is something. Whether it's a big monkey or something that's loose in these woods and I bet you within five years they'll find it,” said Hammer.
Hammer said pretending to be Bigfoot by dressing up in a costume would be dangerous because people around the ouachita national forest are not afraid to shoot.
The Ouachita National Forest is filled with caves that residents are saying could be the home to bigfoot and he only likes to come out at night.
